Have you eaten Okonomiyaki before?

Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is a Japanese-style savory pancake and one of the most popular Japanese foods. You can choose the ingredients as-you-like-it, and it is also the meaning of Okonomiyaki.

There are mainly 2 types of Okonomiyaki which are Kansai-style and Hiroshima-style. The big difference between those Okonomiyaki is how they are baked with ingredients. Kansai-style Okonomiyaki is your choice of ingredients from vegetables, seafood and meat mixed together and grilled. Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki is grilled with ingredients in layers and topped with noodles, and then steam.

The fun thing about Okonomiyaki is choosing your favorite ingredients as your own. The taste and texture is totally different from what you choose.

In Japan, especially on the west side of Japan, there are a lot of Okonomiyaki restaurants.

The style and taste varies depending on which restaurant you go to.

In Tokyo, Monjayaki is very popular. It is a watery version of Okonomiyaki and it is thinner than regular Okonomiyaki. Looks are totally different but the taste is as good as Okonomiyaki.

If you are interested in Okonomiyaki, you should try it once in Japan. You can find Okonomiyaki food stands at a summer festival in this season. Enjoy finding your favorite Okonomiyaki or trying to make your Okonomiyaki by yourself during your stay!
