The Saba Kaido (Mackerel Highway) is an ancient network of roads between Komatsu city (Fukui) to Kyoto.

Why are they called Saba Kaido?

—They were used as a route for transportation of seafood, cultures, craft and more. Many saba were transported, so they are called Saba Kaido.

Saba Kaido is not just one route and there are many roads and the photo route is where the most goods were transported called Wakasa Kaido.

There is a Kumagawa Juku which is a township and was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1996. Located in Wakasa-cho, Mikatakaminaka  District, Fukui Prefecture which is in the Chubu region.
