[Iwate] Michinoku Hydrangea Garden

The rainy season has started in Japan - and that means it’s hydrangea time! One of the best spots to enjoy these colorful blossoms is Michinoku Hydrangea Garden, located in Iwate Prefecture.

 

This is Japan’s largest hydrangea park, and the best time to visit is from late June to late July, depending on the blooming conditions. This year it is open from June 25 to July 21.  More than 40,000 hydrangeas bloom here, representing around 400 varieties. The garden features three walking trails, from beginner to advanced levels, making it easy for visitors of all ages and fitness levels to enjoy a peaceful surroundings. 

One of the garden’s most unique features is Ajisai Pond, where colorful blossoms float gently on the water. It's a photogenic spot, and this area will be open from July 4 this year.

Tips: The trails are unpaved and can be muddy, so waterproof shoes are recommended. For those who need assistance, a limited number of guided carts are available (advance reservation required).

From JR Tohoku Shinkansen Ichinoseki Station about 20 min by taxi.
