Onsens
Throughout Japan you will come across ryokans, which are traditional Japanese-style inns with an onsen.
Onsens also known as hot spring baths, are used for more than a place to relax. Rich in mineral benefits, for over 1400 years it is believed that onsens contain a natural healing benefits such as boosting blood circulation, reducing stress, promoting sleep, relieving pain, and better skin to name a few.
When visiting an onsen, there is an etiquette that must be followed, in order for everyone to enjoy the experience.
Onsens are separated by male and female, and do not allow bathing suits. Before entering the onsen, you will have to first wash your body in the shower area. This is to reduce the amount of dirt, sweat or soap in the onsen.
You will then be given a small towel to wash your body and cover up with while moving from changing room to shower to onsen. This towel is to never be dipped in the onsen water as it is considered dirty.
With this in mind, you are now ready to enjoy the many benefits that onsens have to offer!
Kaiseki Dinner
