Low Water Bridges of the Shimanto River
Feb 8,2019 Comments 0

Shimanto River (四万十川)in the Kochi Prefecture of Shikoku Island is often referred to as the last clear stream in Japan. With the rich forests and lack of dams, the river does not pass through any major urban areas and has been kept from pollution.

Over the river, there are simply made bridges called Chinkabashi (沈下橋、sinking bridge). Chinkabashi are low water crossings without railings. This is to ensure it is not washed away by floods and sunk during high tide. Located close to the water surface and beautifully integrated in the surroundings, there are 47 of Chinkabashi over the Shimanto River, they are an indispensable part of the river scenery and preserved as cultural heritage.

Iwama Low Water Bridge (seen in the pictures) is probably the most well-known and often featured in TV commercials and on postcards. You can cross this bridge on foot or by car. It is quite thrilling to cross by car since the width of the bridge is nearly the width of a car, or so it seems.

Well worth a visit to see the picturesque scenery and experience the thrill of crossing. You can also enjoy various water activities.

To get here simply take the Tosa Kuroshio Line from Kochi Station and get off at Nakamura Station. It takes about 2.5 hours and is covered by the JR Pass. For those who have already been to Japan or first-timers, this place will offer a quaint feel. Definitely recommended!
